Robin Williams death update: Coroner confirms suicide; Westboro Baptist Church threatens to picket funeral

The coroner has confirmed that the cause of death of Robin Williams was suicide by asphyxiation.

Authorities from Marin County, California have recently held a press conference saying that the Oscar winner hanged himself.

Williams, whose TV and movie career spanned nearly four decades, was found dead by his assistant in his Tiburon, California home last Monday, August 11, 2013. He was 63 years old.

According to assistant deputy chief coroner of the Marin County Lt. Keith Boyd, Williams's assistant "was distraught and indicated that it was an apparent suicide due to a hanging and that rigor mortis had set in."

At the time of his death, Williams was reportedly battling severe depression, and was undergoing treatment for it. He also checked into rehab in July.

"He has been battling severe depression of late," said his media representative, Mara Buxbaum. "This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

Since the announcement of the beloved comedian's death, tributes have started pouring in. President Barack Obama released a statement saying, "Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between."

President Obama adds, "But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien -- but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most -- from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets."

Meanwhile, the Westboro Baptist Church, famous for its anti-gay protests, is reportedly threatening to picket the funeral, saying that Williams "decided to use his considerable talent to push filthy life styles [sic], flagrant debauchery and hedonism."

The group also had hashtags for the events: #MustPicketFuneral and #PicketFuneral.

The controversial church claims that Williams has mocked the Catholic church and has promoted homosexuality in his films like The Birdcage. One of the church's tweets includes, "Since his early days in San Francisco @robinwilliams mocked God, every semblance of righteousness encouraged proud Sinners died unrepentant."

Funeral details have yet to be revealed, and the coroner said that the full forensic examination and toxicology results will be available in two to six weeks.
