The upcoming season of the hit reality show "Survivor" will have castaways in pairs just like the previous "Blood vs. Water" season. "Survivor: San Juan del Sur" is different from the other seasons as there will be no returning players this time, Entertainment Weekly reports.
One of the pairs for "San Juan del Sur" include controversial former baseball player John Rocker who will be competing for the $1 million together with girlfriend, businesswoman Julie McGee.
Rocker made headlines after a controversial response in an interview for Sports Illustrated fifteen years ago. The then-football player was asked if he would consider living in New York to play for the Yankees. Rocker answered he would not and described New York as "most hectic, nerve-racking city." He also claimed that what he does not like the most about the place is the foreigners, saying, "You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?" he continued.
EW asked Rocker while on location in Nicaragua if he worries that other castaways may hold the article against him in case they recognize him on the island. "Not really," he answered.
Meanwhile, another pair to compete on "Survivor: San Juan del Sur" is boyfriends, Reed Kelly and Josh Canfield. Kelly has appeared as a model on the cover of a 2012 Time magazine issue as well as an actor on Broadway productions such as "Wicked" and in "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."
In the interview with EW, Kelly compared pointed out the similar traits of his partner Josh to Lisa Whelchel, one of the most castaways in the history of "Survivor."
"And the way she [Whelchel] carried herself in the game was from such an honest place and a place of faith, which is very Josh, so I think that would be a great person to compare him to."
Another pair set to "outwit, outplay, outlast" is the twin sister, "The Amazing Race" alums, Nadiya and Natalie Anderson. "I think this is a couple of notches up from The Amazing Race," says Natalie of their switch from one reality show to another. "You're taking away the human basics and the things you yearn for the most, which is comfort and warmth and food," she continued.
Meanwhile, there was supposedly a tenth pair which decided to drop out early, leaving eighteen castaways to compete this season, according to Survivor Fandom.
The new season marks the return of "Exile Island" where the loser between two loved ones will be sent to in isolation, according to Zap2It.
"Survivor: San Juan del Sur" will have a 90-minute premiere on CBS on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m.
