One of the biggest issues of Samsung Galaxy S4 owners is its shorter battery life. Where other phones in its category may last up to three days on standby without charging, the S4 is said to last only a maximum of 10 hours. This problem is reported to have increased after the Android KitKat 4.4.2 update.

The good news is that there are ways to extend the battery life of the S4. The following tips should help add several hours to its battery life.

Screen-Related Activities

One of the easiest ways to prolong the battery life of the S4 is to reduce the screen brightness according to CBS Pittsburgh. Higher screen brightness requires more energy, and users won't really need anything higher than 10% screen brightness if they are not under direct sunlight given the S4's crisp screen.

Breathcast suggests that another easy way to reduce battery drain is not to use an Android Live wallpaper. The animation in Android's live wallpapers drains the battery faster because the excess movements require constant light adjustments. Choose a static wallpaper instead.

Closing Unused Applications

Leaving some settings and applications running in the background can drain the battery according to AndroidPIT. Some apps that are running in the background may drain the battery faster. This is especially true for camera apps kept running even after use. Go to Applications in the Settings menu, click on the apps that are no longer being used actively, and select Force Stop to kill the app process immediately.

Keeping the S4 on GSM Mode

According to KpopStarz, it is best to keep the S4 on GSM mode. WiFi and mobile data scanning both drain the battery fast, and this is not just true for the Galaxy S4 - it's true for any mobile phone. Both WiFi and mobile data should be turned off when not in use. Users may periodically turn them on when expecting an important message to come in. The same applies for  Bluetooth and GPS - when they are scanning for other active devices (in the case of Bluetooth) or for locations (in the case of GPS), so turn these off when not in use as well.

Finally, the S4's battery life lasts longer when users observe proper care and maintenance of the batteries. Remember to charge the phone as soon as the battery is at 10%. Clean the connectors every month, and use only the original charger whenever possible.
