XDA Developers released their guide for rooting the LG G3 for users who want to use custom ROMs. The guide allows LG G3 users with units from AT&T and Verizon to tweak root settings and install root-only apps. DroidLife has also released a walkthrough video of the process discussed on XDA for users who want to follow the process.
This written guide will walk users through the recommended rooting process published by XDA. Note that rooting may trip a switch in the phone that will void the warranty of the unit with the service providers - users may root at their own risk.
IORoot Process
1. Download the IORoot shell script on the website, and a USB driver for the LG G3.
2. Enable USB Debugging mode on the G3's Developers Option menu, and connect the phone via USB to the Windows computer.
3. Run ADB Devices on the desktop, and reboot the phone in recovery mode. It will show optionns to simply reboot the system, to apply updates from USB, cache, and from ADB. Choose Apply Update from ADB and press the power button.
4. The screen will display a message asking the user to send the package using ADB sideload. On the ADB Devices window in the desktop, type "adb sideload [FILENAME].zip" and press Enter.
5. The file will finish loading, and the phone will ask the user to restart. Once the G3 starts up, SuuperSU will be installed. Run the program, turn on the Root Explorer option, and approve the super user request.
One-Click G3 Rooting
The second option is for users with no background on ADB scripts, but it may be fixed or updated in the future, which might require the user to repeat the rooting proceess. Visit the Towel Root website and click on the lambda symbol to download the APK. Make sure to allow the installation of apps from unknown sources before installing the downloaded Towel Root APK. Android may display a message saying "Google recommends that you do NOT install this app" - select Install anyway.
Once installed, run the application and it will display the welcome screen with the button labelled "make it ra1n." Click the button and the app will install root. Note the warning below the button: "If your phone reboots, towelroot failed." Another video to help through the rooting process come from The Droid Life.
