Blackberry Passport to be unveiled on September 24; "odd-shaped" smartphone expected to be expensive and a hit in Asia and Europe

Blackberry's September 24 event is the alleged venue for the announcement of the Blackberry Passport, the new smartphone offering from the brand. The event will be simultaneously broadcasted in Toronto, London, and Dubai.

According to Christian Today, the invite-only event will show off something new from Blackberry, although the leaks and teasers for the smartphone have already given away most of its specifications. Hallels even went as far as saying that there is nothing to unveil about the smartphone aside from its price. The invitations have been handed out to media and industry guests.

Christian Today describes the smartphone to have a 1440x1440 square pixel, a 4.5-inch screen with a 1:1 ratio, a touch-enabled keyboard, stereo speakers, and four microphones. The smartphone has also been rumored to be in black or white color and have 3450mAh battery. Blackberry Passport will also allegedly sport Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and is as large and wide as other smartphones. According to Christian Today's article, the unconventional shape of the device aims to "enhance productivity and better usability in the workplace.

The company seems to have put effort not only in creating a unique device, but also something that will work. In Blackberry's Twitter status, it stated that "screen size and clarity matter on the #Blackberry #Passport."

Blackberry may be behind others on innovative smartphones, but Christian Post says that the company is far from giving up. According to the article, "Although Blackberry still has their money on their QWERTY phone lines, they have a lot resting on the shoulders of the odd-looking Blackberry Passport." Their latest offering will be running on Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.2GHz Krait 400 processor, shares Christian Today. It will also be equipped with an Adreno 330 graphics processor, 32GB of internal memory, and 3GB of RAM. A microSD card is also present for added storage space.

The Blackberry QWERTY keypad will still be present in the smartphone, adds Christian Today. The keypad allegedly doubles as a secondary touchpad where users can practice swiping gestures.

Blackberry Passport is expected to cost around $760. TechOne3 also says that an exclusive source says the device previously codenamed Windermere will be released in India after a couple of months. It will allegedly be in the Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 35,000 price range.

It could be a big hit in Asia and Europe, thinks Hallels.
