The world number one tennis player in the world has proven that she is worthy of the title after winning this year's US Open. Serena Williams effectively silenced critics after defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final on Sunday at 6-3, 6-3. Her win is her 18th major and sixth US Open title, New York Daily News said.
Despite the fact that Wozniacki and Williams are actually friends off-court, they definitely mean business in the epic match. Serena showed her powerful moves in the first set alone, doing a 114-mph ace in her first break point, ESPN observed. The American tennis player hit a forehand that cracked loud at Arthur Ashe following the Dane's 80-mph serve that the audience unknowingly did a collective gasp.
When it was clear with Serena that she would win, gone were her signature pageant waves and 360 twirl as she opted to fall on her back and laid there for quite a while, overwhelmed with emotion. It could be recalled that in the Slam season, Serena has not performed well. ESPN added that the win had elevated her status to that of legends Martina Navratilova and Chrissie Evert.
Although everyone was focused on Serena's victory, it was a fair question to ask whether her coach and rumored boyfriend Patrick Mouratoglou was actually in the final match. This was confirmed by Mouratoglou himself, who reposted an Instagram user's screengrab of him cheering for his ward on her corner. He also shared the image on his Twitter account, and in one post, crowned Serena as "queen of New York."
On the other hand, it was unclear whether Mouratoglou joined Serena's victory celebration festivities. E! Online said that the champion tennis player was joined by Wozniacki, who nonetheless congratulated her pal also on Instagram, Williams' BFF Val Vogt, plus model Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas.
