NBA Rumors: Minnesota Timberwolves soon to cut JJ Barea after signing Glen Robinson III to guaranteed deal?

By

The Minnesota Timberwolves must have liked what they saw in Glen Robinson III in this year's Summer League after the team decided to sign their No. 40 pick of the draft to a guaranteed deal for the coming 2014-15 season per Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Glenn Robinson III has agreed to a guaranteed deal with Minnesota, league sources tell Yahoo Sports. Robinson was 40th pick in 2014 Draft. Robinson III arrived in Minnesota to sign his contract today, and will join the Timberwolves for the start of training camp, sources said.

The deal also puts the Timberwolves roster to 16 which means that they have to cut one player out from their roster to reach the allowed number of 15 players per team before training camp. Who that player is remains to be seen but its highly likely that its going to be the 30 year old JJ Barea according Cannis Hoopus:

This deal also puts the roster at 16 players, which guarantees someone is leaving. Which in turn all but guarantees that someone is JJ Barea, who's become expendable with the additions of Mo Williams and Zach LaVine. Saunders has been trying to deal Barea to no avail. His contract is $4.5 million, which would be a hefty buyout, but it's not out of the question.

Barea is also on the final year of his contract worth $4.5 million and the Timberwolves are reportedly open to buy out his contract if they can't move him this offseason in exchange for draft picks or young assets.

Despite his strong outing in this years FIBA World Cup, where he averaged 22.0 points and 3.2 assists per game for Puerto Rico, JJ Barea simply has no place for a rebuilding team like the Timberwolves who are looking to build their future on their young, talented players. Barea is better off playing for a contender where his veteran leadership and experience would come of better use especially in the playoffs.
