NBA Rumors: The San Antonio Spurs looking to sign Michael Beasley and Gustavo Ayon this offseason; No signs of contract from LA Lakers

By

It has been a busy week for the defending champions San Antonio Spurs. After putting Aron Baynes on the trade block, the team has reportedly invited free agent forward Michael Beasley for a workout according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Free-agent forward Michael Beasley is working out for the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs at the franchise's practice facility this week, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Beasley has had several workouts for teams this summer, including two with the Los Angeles Lakers, but remains unsigned for the 2014-15 season.

Focus, sacrifice, discipline, and playing in a system are some of the words that would pretty much describe the Spurs organization and its success in the last decade. You can't use the same words, however, on Beasley whose six year career has been plagued by a myriad of off-court issues. With that being said, its quite a surprise why the Spurs would even draw interest on Beasley. But nothing beats the Spurs when it comes to finding unwanted players and putting them in a system where they can maximize their strengths. Unlocking Beasley's potential would surely be a tough challenge for the Spurs but if their is any guy in the league that can do it it's Greg Popovich.

And aside from Beasley, the Spurs also have their eyes set on Gustavo Ayon. The Mexican big man received a contract offer from Shandon in China and the Spurs were quick to make their move to prevent him from playing there according to RealGm who reported that the Spurs have officially presented Gustavo Ayon with a contract offer. Ayon had an impressive outing in this year's FIBA World Cup. He's got excellent mobility for his size and has an underrated versatility making him a good fit for the Spurs.

The Spurs have a full mid-level exception which means that they can pretty much sign Beasley and Ayon this offseason according to Bryan Rose of Fan Sided:

While details of the offer have yet to be released, the San Antonio Spurs do have their full mid-level exception available. Given that, it's completely possible they could attempt to sign not only Ayon but also Michael Beasley if they so desired.

If Aron Baynes gets traded before the deadline, the San Antonio Spurs will have two roster spots to fill before they get set for training camp and Michael Beasley and Gustavo Ayon may just be the two players who get to fill those last couples of spots.
