In an official statement released Tuesday, September 23, HBO confirms that the two actors will star in the second season of the critically-acclaimed crime drama series.

HBO provided the script/screenplay summary: "Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder."

Colin Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him."

Vince Vaughn is Frank Semyon, "a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner."

Prior to the HBO announcement, Colin Farrell confirmed in an interview with Ireland's Sunday World that he would be starring in Season 2. "I'm doing the second series. I'm so excited," he told the Irish newspaper.

The Irish actor also confirmed in the said interview that the second season will consist of eight hour-long episodes and will begin production soon, corroborating HBO's official announcement. "I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot," Farrell said.

HBO also confirmed that "additional casting will be announced as it is confirmed", with Farrell and Vaughn now filling in two pieces of the casting puzzle. Other names rumored to be included or involved, according to Entertainment Weekly, are Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams, and Elizabeth Moss.

Nic Pizzolatto, Season 1's creator and writer, reprised his role for Season 2. Speaking with public radio program "To the Best of Our Knowledge" (via MTV), he said that the new season will be set in California, moving from South Louisiana to the West Coast.

"Right now, we're working with three leads. It takes place in California - not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California - and we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in Season 1," Pizzolatto told the show.

Justin Lin, known for his work in "The Fast & the Furious" franchise, will direct the first two episodes.

Production will begin in California in fall 2014, with an expected premiere date of summer 2015.
