This year's Gotham Awards has highlighted lots of independent films in the United States.. The event was held in New York City, December 1 and according to The Wrap, the movie "Birdman" is the main film that snagged a lot of awards.
It is one of the prestigious recognitions an indie film could receive if they are nominated. "Birdman" won the best feature category, while Tessa Thompson and filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour bagged the breakthrough title. It won against another good film called "Boyhood." The other movies that nominated for this indie film award's night are "Under The Skin." The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Love Is Strange."
According to Deadline, actress Uma Thurman was the host of the event. Big names in the mainstream scene were also there to present awards like Meryl Streep, Ethan Hawke, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm just to name a few.
The movie, "Foxcatcher" starred by Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo also received a special award because of the amazing performance of the cast. Its director Bennett Miller got a tribute that night for his amazing works in the industry. It appears that this award giving body is getting bigger that it is ready to level with the Academy awards.
Variety also revealed that Julianne Moore won the best actress award for the film "Still Alice" under Sony Pictures Classics. She played a woman who was diagnosed to have Alzheimer's before even reaching her old age. The actress couldn't be more grateful for the recognition and she even has shared her love for indie films saying it is where she found who she really is as an actor.
Meanwhile, Michael Keaton won the best actor award for "Birdman." His performance has won the panel and even the audience. His role was very compelling and his work in the movie was indeed worthy of the recognition. Filmmakers and actors are sure to look forward on next year's Gotham Awards.
