Amid what the band has been warned would be career suicide, Tokio Hotel has taken a long break, during which time Bill and Tom Kaulitz moved to Los Angeles. But now that they are back, their new album, "Kings of Suburbia" has been met by a fanbase that makes it feel as though they never left.
In an exclusive interview with Fashion & Style, Bill and Tom talked about what a "massive change" it was to move to Los Angeles from Germany. According to Bill, his life now is not comparable with his life before moving. "We were on the road for such a long time. We've been performing since we were 15," Bills shares, talking about his life consisting mostly of work and travelling.
Bill also opened up about being burnt out and wanting change. When they returned to the studio, Bill mentioned the band wanting to get out of their comfort zone and trying out different sounds.
The change they experienced in moving to Los Angeles also apparently inspired their new album, "Kings of Suburbia," Fashion & Style reports. Bill proceeds to say that "life in general" and "nightlife" influenced the album.
Furthermore, Tom admitted they knew the risks of taking a long break, and they were surprised by the fanbase that welcomed them back. "Even during the hiatus we were still winning awards so our fans are so incredible," Tom gushes.
One of the songs in their new album, "Love Who Loves You Back," is already making news with its rather provocative video, notes Fashion & Style. Bill shares that the video was inspired by the movie "Perfume." "I wanted to do it with the last album but we never had the right song or the right director. It was just the perfect song and the perfect time to do it," Bill explains.
As far as album creation goes, Bill admits he is very hands-on in the entire process. The video was shot at an old hotel's basement in Los Angeles.
Already MTV is giving good reviews about the band's return, saying "Their signature mix of electro beats, new wave-y keyboards, disco swagger and shiny future shock rock, the band's follow-up to 2009's "Humanoid" is like a shot of adrenaline to their legion of fiercely loyal Aliens."
When asked about moving back to Germany, Tom said that he doesn't think he will be doing that. However, Bill adds that they still go to Germany for Christmas and vacations. On a Twitter takeover for PopCrush, Bill also mentioned watching "Family Stone" and eating a lot on Christmas.
Meanwhile, Bill expresses an interest in moving to NYC next year, shares PopCrush.
