Was our favorite web slinger fated to have joined Captain America in "Civil War"? It appears to be so based on an email exchange between senior executives of both Marvel and Sony Pictures leaked on the Internet.
On November 24, Sony's private emails were hacked, Yahoo reported. Apart from business plans, the emails contained sensitive information of around 47,000 employees.
The Wall Street Journal said that the emails contained discussions between Sony Motion Picture Chief Amy Pascual, Sony Chief Executive Kaz Hirai and Walt Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger and other chief officials.
One email dated October 30 had Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad telling Pascal about the possibility of Marvel producing a new Spider-Man trilogy. The email also indicated that Belgrad told the latter will retain creative control, marketing, and distribution of the proposed project. Pascal's email to a partner had some fanboys screaming for joy when it detailed that Marvel wanted to make the Spider-Man cameo happen in a "Captain America" movie, no doubt referencing "Civil War." WSJ said that the discussions later broke down, with Sony moving forward with its new Spider-Man trilogy.
It was obvious for the comic book fans at least to be freaked out with the Spider-Man cameo possibility. In the comic books, Spider-Man plays a key role in the 2006 storyline of Civil War. The rights to produce Spider-Man movies are currently being held by Sony, although fans are clamoring for Spider-Man to come home to the Marvel universe, The Hollywood Reporter said.
Meanwhile, Sony is eager to milk off the Spider-Man franchise with a planned release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" in 2018 from 2016. The studio will also release two spinoffs. The first one is the villain-focused film titled "Sinister Six," which is set for a November 11, 2016 release. The second one, "Venom," has no release date yet.
