CBS is reportedly developing a spinoff from major crime drama "Criminal Minds." Entertainment Weekly said that later in Season 10, the show will have an episode that would introduce the said spinoff. The site has been told that the network's latest project would be focusing on a "division of the FBI that helps American citizens who find themselves in trouble abroad," and shooting of the pilot will be done in February. The writer for the pilot will be showrunner Erica Messer, who will also pull double-duty as executive producers alongside Nick Pepper and Mark Gordon. TVLine added that fans will expect this backdoor episode to happen in the 19th episode.
Deadline said that this is not the first time CBS has spun off the successful drama. back in 2009, CBS did a spring episode series by former "Criminal Minds" showrunner Ed Bernero and Chris Mundy. "Suspect Behavior" enjoyed a midseason run during 2010-2011.
The announcement of a spin-off was somewhat timely considering the fact that one of the show's main romances is coming to an end. Thomas Gibson, who plays Hotch in the series, talked to TVLine about the end of his character's relationship to Beth (Bellamy Young). He said then, "Unfortunately, you know, I was dating the First Lady and she's busy! [Beth's portrayer stars on ABC's Scandal.] So yeah, it's actually dealt with in a nice way. Rossi then of course decides that he needs to play matchmaker for me, and we get very few opportunities for lighter moments like that..."
EW said that although there is a possibility that the spinoff will have an entirely different set of cast members, unidentified sources have said that there is also that possibility that the producers might eye characters from the original to star in the stone.
"Criminal Minds" Season 10 airs Wednesdays at 9PM.
