The Boston Celtics don't have to wait for next summer's free agency to find out if Rajon Rondo will stick with the franchise and sign an extension because the team has reportedly been shopping the All-Star point guard early this season.
Celtics President of Basketball Operations has been in talks with several teams including the Sacramento Kings, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets on possible trade deals but ultimately, the Dallas Mavericks have emerged as the trade destination for Rondo according to a recent Twitter report by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:
Trade call coming tonight between Dallas and Boston, Rondo has been traded to the Mavericks, league sources tell Yahoo... Boston will send Rajon Rondo and Dwight Powell to Dallas for Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, Jamar Nelson, 2015 first-round and future second.
It might not be that steep of a value for an All-Star Caliber point guard like Rondo but Wojnarowski reveals the reality that "Rondo's value no longer dictates an All-Star in return, and waiting until the trade deadline won't improve packages" which is why the Celtics were content on sending the point guard to Dallas in return for a young rising big man like Brandan Wright, solid rotational player in Jae Crowder, and a couple of future draft picks.
For the Dallas Mavericks, the trade deal offers both risks and rewards. The addition of Rondo instantly upgrade their point guard position which has proven to be the team's most glaring weakness in the young season. An All-Star and proven winner like Rondo will surely give Dallas a legitimate chance to contend in a West loaded with dominant point guards.
Wojnarowski also revealed that "Rajon Rondo and his reps made it clear to Dallas that the All-Star guard would be inclined to sign Mavs extension this summer" which provides the Mavericks some form of assurance in the future.
But putting Rondo in a back court beside another ball-dominant guard in Monta Ellis does create some chemistry concerns. Rondo also has a reputation for being moody and it would be interesting to know how he will get along with Coach Rick Carlisle, who tends to be especially tough on point guards.
How Rajon Rondo will end up in Dallas remains to be seen but for now one thing seems to be certain: the veteran point guard will be wearing a Mavs jersey for the remainder of the season.
