In order to address certain ugly issues, Ubisoft released the Patch 4 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox, but recent analysis of the game quality and gamer experience may suggest otherwise. According Digital Foundry, performance of Assassin's Creed Unity is indeed little better on both consoles.
Crowded scenes used to be very problematic, but with the upgrade, there appears to be significant improvement with 100s of NPCs on screen is more fluid than before.
GamePur reported: "While drops down to 20fps and the high teens still occur when the engine is heavily taxed, outside of these situations we see between a 2-5fps increase in performance in some scenes." said Digital Foundry.
FPS improvement was one of the things that were addressed with the coming of the Patch 4; however, this improvement may not be very visible in PS4 as it is in Xbox for high-detail areas with tons of NPC.
Despite the massive size of Patch 4 at 6.5GB, the frame rates are still from perfect. When entering a crowded area, the fps drops to low twenties to even high teens occasionally. Some scenes also only have 2 to 5 fps improvement which is not really obvious to a casual observer, reported PlayStation Lifestyle.
However, Digital Foundry also discovered that "sometimes frame-rates remain similar to the game running with the day one patch enabled, while occasionally they are a little worse."
"After replaying several sections of the game and matching up footage with our previous captures, it's not exactly clear what has been adjusted. The level of detail across the NPCs and the environments appears to be the same, while level of detail (LOD) streaming doesn't seem any different. Some users have reported poorer NPC streaming with the new patch installed, but we couldn't replicate the issue."
At a high level, Patch 4 aims to correct frame rate drops, game crashes, and lost progression. It also updates some gameplay items such as navigation and lock picking, but also addresses connectivity issues and co-op matchmaking. There are indeed improvements but these don't seem to satisfy some gamers of 'Assassin's Creed Unity.
