"Birdman," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Boyhood," "The Imitation Game" headline list of Oscars 2015 nominees, "The Lego Movie" and Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" surprisingly excluded

The nominations for this year's Oscars are in and movies "Boyhood" and "Birdman" are leading the list of possible winners. Some movies earlier predicted to make it big in the Academy Awards were notably absent in certain categories.

Oscars 2015 nominations are in, and leading the pack are "Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" with nine nominations each. Both are in consideration for the best picture category, alongside "Boyhood," "Whiplash," "The Imitation Game," "Selma," American Sniper," and "The Theory of Everything," verifies Daily Mail.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, "Birdman" revolves around the story of a washed-up actor played by Michael Keaton who tries to resurrect his career by staging a Broadway play. The movie is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

"Birdman" was expected to win bit at the Oscar's, but Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel," which won best comedy or musical at the recently concluded Golden Globes, was "the most unexpected awards heavyweight."

Earning eight nominations, "The Imitation Game," an Alan Turing biopic featuring Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role, focuses on homosexuality, shares New York Daily News.

Meanwhile "American Sniper" featuring Clint Eastwood" has six nominations. For the movie, actor Bradley Cooper is nominated for best actor.

"Boyhood," fresh from a win at the Golden Globes for best drama, received a total of six nods.

Surprisingly, Angelina Jolie's, "Unbroken," which was not nominated for best picture as predicted, has been ignored. Instead, it is up for the best sound editing category. Jolie's movie is not the only one to be ignored, as "Big Eyes," featuring Amy Adams and "Cake," with Jennifer Aniston, were not recognized as well.

Another surprising turnout was "The Lego Movie" having been left out of the best animated feature film category, where it was expected to lead. The movie's nomination is for best original song for "Everything is Awesome." Nominees for best animated feature film are "Big Hero 6," "The Boxtrolls," "How to Train Your Dragon 2," "Song of the Sea," and "The Tale of Princess Kaguya."

Streaming live from Beverly Hills, the nominees for the 87th annual Academy Awards were revealed Thursday morning.
