First "Fanstastic Four" Trailer is Out! Science-Fiction Look at Marvel's First Family Unveiled as Castings Revealed

By

We've been waiting for a "Fantastic Four" trailer for what seems like years- ever since the film was announced, the filmmakers (director Josh Trank and screenwriter Simon Kinberg) and 20th Century Fox have been unbelievably tight-lipped about the latest incarnation of the classic Marvel Comics characters.

Well, the tight-lippedness ends today. Fox has just released the first "Fantastic Four" trailer, and despite all the secrecy and the rumors that the film would be a disaster (among those rumors- that Trank had trashed the set in a rage, that the film would drastically destroy the classic characters, that the Fox execs hated and were embarassed by it), "Fantastic Four" looks pretty great.

First, let's check out the trailer below.

Entertainment Weekly delved into the trailer in detail- noting that the film takes many cues from the "Ultimate Fantastic Four" line of Marvel Comics. It's from there that we get details like Reed Richards (Miles Teller) and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) being childhood friends, as we see in the trailer. It also explains why this Fantastic Four is significantly younger than the traditional incarnations of the characters (like the ones seen in the "Fantastic Four" movies from ten years ago.

As well, Yahoo got filmmakers Trank and Kinberg to talk through the trailer, fleshing out some of the details only glimpsed for a second or two.

The two mention that they want "Fantastic Four" to be completely serious, like a science fiction film with a heavy emphasis on the "science." According to Trank, this was how he first pitched the film to Stan Lee- and Lee apparently loved the idea.

As well, the two mention that the shot of Jamie Bell first transforming into The Thing (that large chunk of rock that's falling apart) is bound to be the most viral-ready image from the whole trailer.

Although, in our opinion, that giant blue beam at the end is pretty cool too.

There's still many months to go before "Fantastic Four" is in theaters (the film opens on August 7th, 2015) and that means there's plenty more time for trailers, new info, TV spots, and all the other accompaniments to a big summer film. But for now, let's just enjoy the trailer we've got.
