Cruel Intentions actress Sarah Michelle Gellar openly expressed her disapproval in beauty contests. Through her Twitter account, the blonde actress of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame let her followers know her opinion on recently concluded Miss Universe pageant where Miss Columbia Paulina Vega won the title.
"On the subject of "Princesses", can we finally end beauty pageants? Cruelty to humans? Let's never forget "The Iraq" #MissUniverse, " the exact Twitter message of 37-year old actress.
It's not clear which part of the said international beauty competition that Gellar was upset about, but with her mentioned of "the Iraq", perhaps she gave a clue. In 2007 Miss Teen USA, one of the unforgettable scene was when candidate Caitlin Upton, from South Carolina, was asked by Friday Night Lights actress Aimee Teegarden where she said something about "the Iraq."
"Recent polls have shown one-fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?" The question of Teegarden to Upton during question and answer portion.
"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future," Upton answered, which became subject of criticisms and parodies later on.
Moving on to this year Miss Universe, the question to top 5 remaining candidates was "What is the greatest contribution of your country to the entire world?" Each of the candidates gave their best answer but, obviously Vega's reply earned high points from the judges. After the pageant, there's still issue concerning Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennel who was crowd's favorite but ended up in 5th runner up.
In some other news, Mary Jean Lastimosa, Miss Philippines, name is now under the controversy of failing to enter the Top 5 finalists. The blame for the Asian beauty not entering the finals was pointed out to the organization and her evening gown, designed by Alfredo Barraza, who is a Columbian designer.
