Back before all this "Spider-Man" Sony/Marvel kerfuffle started, "Sinister Six" was on track to release on November 11, 2016. But since that date was decided, Sony's rebooted their entire "Spider-Man" franchise and things are going to have to change. Things like "Sinister Six."
For those desperate to see a villains-only team-up movie, don't worry- "Sinister Six" hasn't been cancelled. Just delayed. By at least two years, probably. The new Sony/Marvel "Spider-Man" film will release on June 28, 2017, and that's sure to be Sony's number one priority from now until the film's in theaters. That means a lot less time and attention for "Sinister Six," which at the earliest will now probably stick to Summer 2018 (trying to fit the film into the same summer as the "Spider-Man" reboot makes things a little cramped, don't you think?).
Amazingly, none of Sony's spin-off plans- which also include a "Venom" film and a proposed all-female Spider-team- have reportedly been damaged by this new Spider-Man. According to the studio, all spin-offs are "moving forward." But there's an interesting point to be made (and was made, by Newsarama)- all those spin-offs are technically part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And so is every Sony "Spider-Man" property from now on, because if Peter Parker's in the same universe as the Avengers, then Peter Parker's whole world is officially canon as well.
How might this change the outcomes of "Sinister Six" and those other films? Might Sony want to poach a Marvel Cinematic Universe villain or two for their own villain-heavy film? Would Loki show up to snicker at these Spider-villains before disappearing back to Asgard?
The possibilities are endless. The Verge had the idea to actually do "Sinister Six" before the next "Spider-Man," and use it as a final capstone on Sony's "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise. But honestly, there's no way Sony would divert precious time and resources away from a "Spider-Man" film that will undoubtedly be far better than their last two. More likely, the next time we hear about "Sinister Six" will be a long way away.
