PlayStation 4 regains its long-standing glory as it took over a huge console sales in the US for January 2015, beating Xbox One.

PlayStation 4 (PS4) makes up a massive contribution in the console gaming industry, which has a total of $15 billion in the US alone.

Games Beat reported that PS4 remains the cumulative leader in the US according to NPD data as it sold 18.5 million PS4 units and 81.8 million software units worldwide since its debut in November 2013.

Sony's game console ends Microsoft-owned Xbox One's two-month win streak. December and November are considered two of the most significant months of the year in terms of game sales.

Remarkably, Microsoft increased price from $350 to $400 on the first week of 2015 which likely paved the way for Sony. Before finishing off January, Xbox One's price has been dropped back to $350 amid January, but effect on sales was not immediately recovered.

Both PS4 and Xbox One enjoyed 60 percent rise in sales compared to their predecessors PS3 and Xbox 360 of the same period last year.

Outside of the Sony-Microsoft rivalry, Nintendo continues to show down in sales with a solid Super Smash Bros. game. The publisher confirmed it sold 180,000 physical and digital copies.

Nintendo-owned Wii U's hardware and software increased by nearly 30 percent and 45 percent, respectively, last month over the same month last year.

However, overall hardware sales has been not good as 23 percent cooled off after the Christmas season. Accordingly, eight generation console hardware sales dropped by 22 percent while the seventh generation console hardware sales were down by 35 percent.

Meanwhile, apocalypse-themed game Dying Light pushed to the top soft in software charts after gaining $625.7 million total sales in January. This is 5 percent lower than January 2014's $662.1 million.

Here's a full list of the overall top-selling software console games.

Dying Light is considered the only game with respectable revenue in its debut in January exceeding track record of The Evil Within, which opened in October 2014, NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.

Up this February, PlayStation 4 will debut The Order: 1886 on the 20th, which presumably will make a good performance in charts.

The game is set in a steampunk Victorian era and revolves around an order of knights who fight to protect the world from half-breed werewolves.

Games coming out this week include Total War: Attila (Feb.17), Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed (Feb. 19), and Dead or Alive 5: Last Round (Feb. 20).
