That Naughty Dog would make "The Last of Us 2" seems pretty obvious. The first "The Last of Us" was a mega-huge success with critics and average gamers alike, and hailed as one of the best games of 2013. As well, Naughty Dog's confirmed that there's a "The Last of Us" movie underway from Screen Gems. Naughty Dog would want to capitalize on all that success, right? And capitalizing would mean "The Last of Us 2."
But amazingly, the sequel that everyone wants might never arrive. As MoviePilot suggests, Naughty Dog is currently finishing up the final game in the "Uncharted" franchise- "Uncharted: A Thief's End." And once that game's on store shelves, Naughty Dog will be picking a new property to focus on (they also suggest that "The Last of Us" might take a few cues from "Uncharted's" gameplay, which would be fantastic). Could their next property be "The Last of Us?"
It's not entirely clear. When speaking to GameInformer (via Crave Online), Bruce Straley of Naughty Dog admits that while the studio is still working on the fourth "Uncharted" game, that's all they're thinking about right now.
"We totally get it, because we have those same feelings as well. We have brainstormed sequel ideas for The Last of Us, and we've brainstormed ideas for new games, but all of that is put on ice right now while we work on Uncharted 4."
"Put on ice" doesn't sound that promising, does it? Kinda sounds like Naughty Dog doesn't really know where it's headed next, and it doesn't sound like they're so enthusiastic about another "The Last of Us."
What might be the biggest hurdle for "The Last of Us 2" is that so much of the creative staff is currently working on the game's movie adaptation. And apparently, they're pretty overworked- when Gamestop spoke to Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, he was so out of it he got the two games mixed around in his head.
"When I'm in the office, it's all Uncharted 4 all the time," Druckmann told Gamespot. "When I should be sleeping, it's the Uncharted movie."
Then, Gamespot corrected him. "Yeah, sorry, The Last of Us movie."
"The Last of Us 2" would be great and all, but Neil Druckmann not collapsing from sleep deprivation would be even better. Please take a nap or two on us. We can sit and wait patiently while Naughty Dog takes its time, especially if that means "The Last of Us 2" comes out as terrific as the first game.
