Of the five women up for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar this Sunday, Patricia Arquette seems like the definite frontrunner. Arquette, who plays Olivia Evans, the single divorced mother in "Boyhood," has already brought in a number of major awards before the Oscars have even aired. Arquette has a Golden Globe and a SAG Award to her name, both of which are an excellent predictor of who's going to win at the year's biggest movie awards.
Also, being in a film as popular as "Boyhood" certainly doesn't hurt.
According to the official Oscar site, here's the total breakdown of this year's "Best Supporting Actress" category.
Laura Dern, for "Wild."
Keira Knightley, for "The Imitation Game."
Emma Stone, for "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)."
Meryl Streep, for "Into the Woods."
And, of course, Arquette for "Boyhood."
Arquette definitely seems like the frontrunner. Dern and Knightley have potential to win, and while "Birdman" is a leading favorite alongside "Boyhood" to win Best Picture, it doesn't seem like Stone has won the same acting praise that Arquette's getting this year. And while Streep seems to win Oscars every year, it seems doubtful she'd win for something like "Into the Woods." That may have just been a filler nomination. Of those five, Arquette seems the most likely to walk away with a trophy.
Vanity Fair adds that this season's Supporting Actress pickings are a little weak all-around, which may lead to Arquette grabbing the win. But that she's also done a terrific job in "Boyhood" as an average single mom with average problems- something you don't often see at the movies.
Admittedly, Arquette just seems happy to be getting praised. When she got her SAG award, here's what she said (via International Business Times).
"I can't tell you what this means to me. I'm a fourth generation actor. My family has been committed to acting for over a century through feast or famine. My father Lewis Arquette taught me to approach work with compassion and gratitude. And also taught me how hard it is to make a living as an actor."
Just a few days left until the Oscars are upon us. Finish tallying up your scorecards soon- whether you think Patricia Arquette and "Boyhood" have the win, or someone else could sweep at the last minute, it's bound to be a fun show.
