"How to Train Your Dragon 2" is up for the Best Animated Feature Oscar next week, but right now the film's creators are more focused on their next film, "How to Train Your Dragon 3." Which will be the final film in the franchise, to the ire of many dragon-loving moviegoers.
And contrary to how most directors play it these days, Dean DeBlois (who directed the second film and co-directed the first) isn't staying quiet about the film, its plot details, and even the film's ending.
In speaking to Collider, DeBlois gave a basic outline of the film's story.
"[Dragon 3 is] the culmination of Hiccup's coming of age. Both he and Toothless are now chiefs of their respective tribes, and it's a dueling story where you have both characters trying to do what's right for their kind, and an eventual outcome where Hiccup is able to stand on his own. We're gonna take the story to where the books begin, which is Hiccup as an adult reflecting back on a time where there were dragons, suggesting that the dragons will in some way go away. Why and could they come back and the mystery of what all that is will be saved for the actual story."
As well, he shared that the film will feature Drago Bludvist (the second "Dragon" film's villain) in a major way. It may actually be more extensive than in "How to Train Your Dragon 2," where the villain didn't get too much screen time.
DeBlois also explained that he was only about halfway done with the script, but he's currently working as hard as he can on it in time for the third movie's production.
But DeBlois isn't the only one talking "HTTYD 3"- Cate Blanchett, who starred in the second film as Hiccup's dragon-taming mother, revealed that she'll be returning for the third film as well. Although she has no idea what she'll be doing.
"I am really excited. I don't know what it's going to be, but Dean has such an extraordinary imagination. And he directed in such a detailed, engaged way - he holds a firm grip on the universe."
Can "How to Train Your Dragon 3" top the massive success of the first two films? Will it be a fitting end to the franchise? If the dragons disappear in the film, where are they going? We have so many dragon-based questions- hopefully, DeBlois will step in between now and the next film's release to give us some answers.
