Sony quells the rumors that 'The Last Guardian' release date is cancelled as trademark in the US has been abandoned.
Seemingly, this was due to an administrative error at PlayStation America and Sony has confirmed to Gamespot that the project is still in development.
Based on the documentation from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, a notice was sent to Sony in July last year to remind the company that the game's trademark is required to be extended.
Since 2013, Sony is claimed to have frequently extended the trademark of the game but there was no action done upon the latest request for extension. that prompted speculations online that the trademark is now cancelled.
But amid the rumor sorrounding the cancellation of the 'Last Guardian' release, Sony has confirmed that the project is still in development.
'The Last Guardian' has been underway for more than five years following the official announcement in 2009 made by director Fumito Ueda stating that his creative contribution to the game was already complete for a long time.
The latest news about 'The Last Guardian' release emerged in December last year when Ueda metioned in his interview that the game was "moving forward under completely new conditions."
'The Last Guardian' release created by Team ICO (Shadow of the Colossus, ICO) is a game about a young boy and his bond with a large, flying dog-like creature.
It was first unveiled at E3 2009 but has been reportedly experiencing a string of setbacks including the departure of producer Kenji Kaido, executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama, and Team ICO founder Fumito Ueda and the possible transition from PS3 to the PS4.
Gamespot posted an update to this story reporting that Sony has since filed for a petition to revive the abandoned trademark application that can be found here.
So, gaming geeks can still keep their hopes up for 'The Last Guardian' release date to arrive sometime in the near future.
