This year, Netflix will premiere its first original movies. And once that happens, the streaming service is bound to become a hub for some of the best movies around (kind of like how Netflix went from having one semi-popular series- "Lillyhammer"- to one huge series- "House of Cards"- to becoming a giant in original TV programming).
And when those Netflix movies hit, you're going to need to know what they're about, and which ones are worth watching. Keep reading, and we'll tell you exactly what's up.
The first film to premiere on Netflix will be "Croutching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Legend." As was revealed in September (via Time), the film is a sequel to Ang Lee's classic martial arts film, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." It'll star Michelle Yeoh (who also starred in the original), and feature Donnie Yen of the "Ip Man" franchise. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend" will premiere on August 28, 2015.
After "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II" comes another sequel to a popular franchise- "Kong." As reported by PR Newswire, Netflix will premiere a new, animated "King Kong" film- simply titled "Kong"- at an undisclosed point in 2016. The film's meant to pave the way for a new animated "King Kong" kids show, so don't expect this one to be as intense as the 2005 Peter Jackson "King Kong."
On top of that, a new Pee-Wee Herman film is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2016. Titled "Pee-wee's Big Holiday," this might be a little different from previous "Pee-wee" films, as it's being directed by Judd Apatow. Apatow's not known for kid-friendly fare- mostly, he's known for super-explicit R-rated comedies. We'll see how that fits in with Pee-wee's sense of style.
As well, Netflix has other projects in the works. They've signed a deal to get four exclusive films from Adam Sandler- the first being "Ridiculous 6," an ensemble Western comedy. They've also got four films from the Duplass brothers in the works. Like we said- once Netflix gets to making their own movies, it'll be impossible to stop them.
