Microsoft Speaks on Windows Store Scam, Official Statement Unveiled

Microsoft alongside 'Dark Dungeon' game developer, Red Hook Games, have issued their official statement in response to the recent scam that invaded Windows Store last week.

Courtesy of Kotaku, Red Hook Games has issued their response regarding the recent Window Store cam which read:

'We first learned about [the fake] yesterday (Feb 22). Someone emailed us after purchasing a copy of Darkest Dungeon from the Windows Store and being unable to open the file they downloaded. The individual gave no indication as to the nature of the file - virus/malware/etc.

Shortly thereafter, a Microsoft staff member contacted us, and assisted us in setting up a complaint. Since then, we've had several people from Microsoft reach out to help, from various departments. There is no formal resolution at this time.

We've called attention to the scam on Twitter, and want to remind anyone interested in purchasing the game to do so through Steam or Humble."

Additionally, company spokesperson of Microsoft also stated that bogus version of 'Darkest Dungeon' is no longer listed on the Windows Store as saying, "We are aware of recent claims of "scam" or unauthorized versions of certain games being sold in the Windows Store.

We take claims of intellectual property infringement seriously and review them in accordance with our standard procedures. We also continue to review the content of our Store periodically as described in our recent blog post, as we work to deliver a great customer experience and provide fair and transparent developer policies and enforcement."

Via Twitter, Red Hook Games also posted their warning about the Windows Store scammer that sells their new game, Darkest Dungeon at only $3.99 last week credited to a suspicious point of sale page of Balaji Chowdary.

Please ensure you purchase the game from Steam or Humble. Scams have been reported and we are checking into them.

If anyone has a contact at Windows Game Store, please share. Somebody is scamming DD by selling it (illegally) on there.

On a related note, if you didn't buy Darkest Dungeon on Steam or Humble Store right now, you got scammed.

Darkest Dungeon is not just the only game being sold on the store by the unscrupulous scammer but also listed a copy of Lego Batman 3 (also 2MB), and SCS's Tomáš Duda points out multiple fake versions of Euro Truck Simulator 2.
