"Gambit," the latest spin-off from the X-Men franchise, will star Channing Tatum as the mutant Gambit, who can manipulate kinetic energy. The X-Men series has had spin-offs before, like "The Wolverine" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." There's also "Deadpool" coming out next year. But "Gambit" may not be like any of those films at all- and may be an entirely new take on the superhero film.
For one, there's Channing Tatum himself, who spoke about the film and claimed it's going to be very unique. Via Cinema Blend:
"I don't want to give too much away because we don't know that much right now other than who Gambit is. We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We're obviously going to go to the saving the world superhero movies eventually, but not for the first one."
So Gambit won't be saving the world? What will he be doing, then?
It's possible, that with Tatum's strengths in comedy (especially in the "21 Jump Street" franchise), that Gambit might have more of a comedic edge to it. Or, it's possible the film could involve time travel- MoviePilot has a rumor that Cable, the time-traveling mutant, may have a part to play in "Gambit." If he does, you can bet that Tatum will be traveling through time at some point.
As well, MoviePilot hints that Cable and Gambit may both show up in "X-Men: Apocalypse" first, before moving on to their own film with "Gambit."
411Mania, meanwhile, doesn't even think Tatum would be a good Gambit. Which might be the case, if Fox was going a traditional route with the film. But if they're not, Tatum might be the perfect choice- for a funny, inventive, and potentially time-traveling "X-Men" spin-off hero.
"Gambit" will release on October 7, 2016 and star Channing Tatum as Gambit.
