Panic was evident among the watchers as the Kerala sky was suddenly streaked with a fireball. Many onlookers had expressed panic as they saw that fast moving ball of light cross the night sky. However, scientists had confirmed that the fireball was indeed a meteor.
The fireball and the sonic boom that followed the incident were investigated by a team of experts from the State and Central Government. They concluded that the materials recovered from the two different places in the State to be particles from the meteor. At Kuruppampady, a farmer had spotted a strange looking object in his field. Also at Thrissur, a shining unfamiliar rock was found at the rooftop of a house.
According to Sekhar Kuriakose, a scientist investigating the fireball incident had claimed that their primary assessments point out to the possibility of the fireball being a meteor. He said that the objects collected from the spot have high specific gravity. Though they are small in size, it had more than normal weight. The said materials gathered by the same scientist had fit the general characteristics of being a fragment that had fallen off a "bolide". A bolide is an extremely bright meteor that often explodes in the Earth's atmosphere. He also said that the objects which had brilliant streaks had the uniqueness that is only present to meteors. The brilliant streaks are due to the presence of iron and nickel.
The fireball had appeared on the parts of Thrissur, Ernakulam, Palakaad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts of Kerala. The fireball was suspected to have plunged at an area in Karimalloor village. It was found charred by the scientists and other people investigating the said incident.
Another speculation from decanherald stated that the fireball could be celestial debris, a rocket or some satellite debris.
