Is Jussie Smollett Gay? ‘Empire’ Actor Doesn’t See Any Problem With It

Is Jussie Smollett gay? 'Empire' star refused to deny or confirm about his sexuality. His sexual orientation was inadvertently revealed by Mike Yoba in an interview.

In an interview with Sway In The Morning, Smollett, who star as Jamal Lyon in Fox's 'Empire,' has consistently declined to make any comment about the statement made by his co-star Malik who brought him out of the closet last month, reported Towle Road.

"I'm not willing to confirm or deny anything. I live my life. If someone's looking for a box to put me in, then that's not going to happen. But I live my life. If you really want to know about me, just watch because I don't hide anything. I just choose not to talk about my personal life."

When co-host Tracy G asked him if Jamal Lyon, who is in a journey of coming out while vying to control his father's exorbitant riches, if his orientation is also that of Jamal's, the actor said that it's just fair, reported Madame Noire.

"No. But it's also fair and I don't see a problem with that and I don't really care."

In another interview with Black Film, Mike Yoba shared what he believes to be the reason why the series 'Empire' is such a big hit. He reasoned that it is because the show sympathizes and tells the story of people who are often underrepresented in the media.

"I think that our show represents a huge opportunity to stay in the culture beyond entertainment value and there's an intrinsic nature of you have the gay factor, right? So, obviously, Lee is gay. That was an important storyline for him. I think it's important for people to see themselves. Even within the Black community. But if you aren't really, really taking it off of screen and making it live in the community in a significant way...like I know Jussie, he is gay, and he's very committed to issues around the LGBT community. He and I have a very close relationship. There a lot of things that I'm doing. I have a company called iconic32.com. We create or enhance cultural movements for social good using pop culture."

However, Yoba's publicist explained that the actor was misquoted about revealing Jussie's being gay.

"My reference to Jussie was only about his character and storyline on Empire," he told USA Today.
