K-pop supergroup Girls' Generation is part of a major push to get their music heard in new markets and all around the world. It's been announced that Girls' Generation, along with Red Velvet and Super Junior, will be part of the "Best of Best in the Philippines" concert at the Philippine Arena on April 12.
The Philippines visit is part of an increasing popularity for Girls' Generation, as they've played many shows in the Philippines in the past, and have always received rave reviews and stadiums ful of screaming, adoring fans. As well, Girls' Generation is starting to balloon outwards in popularity in other parts of the world, including countries like Japan, Thailand, China and the Philippines. However, the group is starting to gain a much larger foothold in Europe, gathering fans in France, Germany and the UK.
But will Girls' Generation- or any major K-pop group- ever truly break into the US market? Billboard notes that PSY's hit "Gangnam Style" was a major hit in the United States, but K-pop in general has failed to gain any kind of a foothold in the USA. They also note that girl groups have had plenty of popularity in the US, including groups like the Spice Girls or TLC- so Girls' Generation should have no problem fitting in once they can find a way to break into that market. As well, Billboard adds that upbeat, bouncing hits like " Beep Beep" would be a perfect song to get a ton of air time on US radio.
Girls' Generation also dominated the Japan Golden Disc Awards recently, winning awards for "Best 3 Album" and "Song of the Year By Download." Girls' Generation obviously has the crossover appeal to be a massive hit all over the world- it's just a matter of time before that's the case.
