Fans of Captain Marvel might be disappointed to hear this: the fan-favorite Marvel character won't be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It's a pairing that made sense, after all, Captain Marvel spends most of her time in space, and the Guardians of the Galaxy spend basically all of their time in space. As far as cosmic Marvel movies go, those are the top two right now- it's no wonder that people wanted them to crossover.
But sadly, it's not the case. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 director James Gunn has revealed that there will be absolutely no mention or appearance of Captain Marvel in his next Guardians film. Specifically, he said this on Twitter: "Getting this a lot this morning. As I said months ago, no, sorry."
That's no reason to despair, though. While there's currently only one cosmic film series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Guardians of the Galaxy), in a few years that number is going to skyrocket. By the end of Marvel's Phase 3, there'll be Guardians, Captain Marvel, Inhumans and Avengers: Infinity War. And any of those last two films are a perfect point for Captain Marvel to crossover.
Of those two, though (Inhumans and Infinity War), Infinity War makes the most sense. The Inhumans tend to get bogged down in politics and their own squabbles off in their own world, while Infinity War is going to be a massive event that draws together all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It makes much more sense for Captain Marvel, a heroic character, to jump in to help stop Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet than to hang out with the Inhumans for a little while. Also, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a much better crossover point with Inhumans anyway. Hopefully, once Captain Marvel is introduced, we start seeing her in every film we can.
Captain Marvel will premiere on November 2, 2018.
