With every passing week, Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War" just gets bigger and bigger- this week, Hawkeye (played by Jeremy Renner) is the latest superhero to join the upcoming film. According to IGN, Hawkeye is officially part of the next "Captain America" film, adding that Renner "will shoot Captain America: Civil War this spring, then segue to Story of Your Life in mid-June."
However, now that Hawkeye's a part of the film, the question remains: whose side will he be on? The "Civil War" story arc in Marvel Comics is about Captain American and Iron Man facing off over the idea of superheroes registering their identities with the government. Captain America is against the idea, and Iron Man is for it. And obviously, Hawkeye will need to pick a side- and it's likely he'll pick Iron Man's.
It's already been established in films like "Thor" and "The Avengers" that Hawkeye is a major player with S.H.I.E.L.D., and though S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't exist anymore in the MCU in an official capacity, it's likely that Hawkeye will side with the institutional side of superhero-dom. Also, with Black Widow and Falcon joining the film after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it's likely those two are on Captain America's side, so Iron Man needs a few heroes of his own for his team.
MoviePilot speculates that Hawkeye will join Stark's team, as well, although they add that Falcon may join Stark's side in a surprise plot twist (this seems likely, given that Falcon and Captain America are usually considered best friends in Marvel canon).
As well MoviePilot confirms that in "Civil War," Tony Stark will have the villain role- meaning that if Hawkeye's on his side, he'll be a villain too. What will that mean for "Captain America: Civil War?" Or the Marvel Universe in general? "Captain America: Civil War" could be a much more important movie than anyone expects.
