A glowing Pac-Man and a barrelling Donkey Kong are on a rampage in the streets of New York in an alien invasion. Enter Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage to save the world from iconic video games characters from yesteryear.
The first trailer of "Pixels", which was directed by Chris Columbus, and based on a short film by Patrick Jean, has definitely amused and stimulated theatre fans.
Cinemablend said that "Pixels" there is an indication of both "Wreck It Ralph" and "The Lego Movie", "Based on the 2010 viral video that depicted Donkey Kong and Pac-Man destroying New York, "Pixels" is set to reimagine these iconic video games characters from yesteryear in a fresh, albeit slightly evil fashion."
"Pixels" debut trailer starts with a shadow of a mysterious alien object descending over the White House, which is reminiscent of "Independence day". The trailer also has interesting explanation on why Pac-Man and Donkey-Long are attacking earth. The explanation reads:
"In 1982 NASA sent a time capsule into space in hopes of contacting other life forms. Included were examples of our life and culture. It was intended to be a message of peace. Unfortunately it was taken the wrong way."
Time reported that the movie was based on a 2010 French animated short film in which classic video games, such as Space Invaders, Pac-Man and Tetris attack New York.
Kevin James plays the President of the United States William Cooper, and calls upon his childhood best friend, former 1980s video game champion Sam Brenner, portrayed by Adam Sandler, who is now a home theatre installer and had a previous relationship with Williams' wife. Cooper and Brenner lead an unlikely team of old-school arcaders (Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet from video game invasions.
"Pixels" will hit theatres on July 24, 2015.
