Zoe Saldana won't be joining the Dolce & Gabbana boycott bandwagon, which caused quite a stir last week following Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's controversial comments on same-sex parenting, IVF treatment and "synthetic children."
Unlike many Hollywood A-listers and celebrities who have supported Elton John in his call to boycott Dolce & Gabbana, Saldana spoke out in defense of the legendary Italian designers. The 36-year-old actress claimed Dolce and Gabbana are entitled to speak their mind, referring to the duo's stand against gay adoptions and children born through IVF (in vitro fertilization), according to E! News.
When asked whether she would also boycott the high-end brand because of the controversy, Saldana replied, "No, not at all! That would be the stupidest thing if it affected my fashion choice." However, while the "Guardians of the Galaxy" star believes that people are entitled to their opinion, she said she would rather have chosen not to be "so public about something that's such a personal thing."
It will be recalled that in an earlier interview with Italian magazine Panorama, Dolce and Gabbana made the much-talked about remarks on natural families, gay adoptions and IVF treatments. "I'm not convinced by those I call the children of chemicals, synthetic children," Dolce stated. "Wombs for rent, sperm chosen from a catalogue...psychiatrists are not ready to confront the effects of this experimentation."
Gabbana agreed and said, "The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging."
The pair's statements have since received widespread criticism, particularly from A-list celebrities including John, Ricky Martin, Madonna and Martina Navratilova, among others. John, who shares two IVF born sons with husband David Furnish, expressed his anger via Instagram.
"How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic,'" he wrote, calling out the pair for their "judgmental" and "archaic" opinions. "I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana," the furious musician added.
Saldana, however, has a different take. "Obviously it caused some sensitivity, but then again if you continue to follow the news, you see they all kinda hugged it out, so why are we making a big deal about it?" she asked.
"I'm certainly not going to be refuting when they are adopting synthetic children, however they wanted to say it," the "Avatar" star added. "I do think things are lost in translation."
