A string of reddit rumours flooded Metal Gear forums telling fans that Hideo Kojima is quitting Konami. The video designer quickly dispels the rumours after issuing a joint statement with Konami that he is '100% involved' in the development of MGS5. However, Kojima didn't specifically tell fans if he will continue in Konami after the game's release.
The rumours started when Kojima's website and twitter account began redirecting traffic to the new Metal Gear Solid website and his name taken off posters and banners of the said game. Though reasons for the changes are not yet provided, Kojima exiting before the release of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is false.
Hideo Kojima was among the few video game directors that are fully involved in the Metal Gear Series straight from the start. He was director, game designer, producer and writer in every major Metal Gear Solid title ever released. Kojima is associated extremely to Metal Gear that rumours of his apparent exit is a total shock to fans.
Though Kojima is currently telling fans that he will be involved in the MSG5 all throughout its development, what comes after its release in September is still unclear.
It can be remembered that in an earlier interview with IGN, Kojima said that with MSG5, he would be 'closing the loop,' telling fans that this would be '...the final Metal Gear.' However, he further continued that, 'even if the Metal Gear franchise continues, to me, this is the last Metal Gear.'
Many see this as an ominous statement of an imminent closure to a solid career, but it could just be a transition from Metal gear titles to other Konami brands in the future. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is set for release in September on the PS4, XBO and PC.
