Anonymous, a Notorious Hacker Group Hacks NYPD Website

By

Anonymous is at it again. The hacker group notorious in 2012 for hacking the California Statewide Law website is making headlines again. This time around it focused its technical genius on the West Coast as it ravaged through the data of an NYPD union website.

The online hacktivists, however did not leave any hidden message or pronouncements on why it made its latest caper. Added to that, traces of malware were left on the officer's site -casting doubt in pundits' minds if Anonymous is really the culprit.

Unwarranted Outside Online Interference

Union officials of the NYPD captains union confirm that their website was shutdown due to a cyberattack.

"There are indications the attack on our website was orchestrated by a group identifying themselves as "Anonymous" who have a history of targeting police websites across the country," so advised the union's president Roy Richter in his letter to the group's members, according to the New York Times.

This is not the first time the group caught public attention. In 2011, the same group threatened a cyberwar against the NYPD following the clash between the cops and the Occupy Wall Street protesters. Recently, the hacktivist is taking on greater evil, baring its teeth in an online war against ISIS.

Spreading Menace

In 2012, the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association was targeted by Anonymous suffering a similar online catastrophe - albeit more sinister.

Because of that hacking, member's addresses and credit card information were released to the public straight from the police association's website.

This time around, Richter assured the association he leads that no "confidential information has been compromised."

Apparently, the NYPD police website does not store personal information. However, more stringent security measure were taken to protect the officer's website, Richter's letter detailed.

An Online Irritant

As no substantial damage was done, the NYPD hack appears more of an irritant than a serious threat, the letter revealed.

However, pundits are casting doubt as to the identity of the hackers saying Anonymous has no motive in orchestrating the whole thing.

Secondly - and perhaps more importantly - traces of malware were found on the website, a direct contradiction to the way the infamous hacktivist group operates which leaves no trace at all in its online adventures, reports Digital Trend.
