PS4 just came out less than two years ago and PS4 slim version isn't even around yet. However, some people are already asking about the next generation of Sony's gaming console: the PS5.
Anticipating the PS5's release is way too early, and we've said it before. At this point, people should just enjoy the current technology.
Well, there are just some who can't handle not thinking about the future. So let's talk about it again. Judging from the way the company previously released its gaming console line, there appears to be a five- to seven-year gap between Playstation versions.
PS4 was released on November 15, 2013 which is seven years later than the PS3's November 11, 2006 coming out date. On the other hand, PS3 came out about six years after PS2's March 4, 2006 release date which in turn is a little more than five years earlier than the first Playstation's release. Seeing this trend, it's safe to say that a PS5 console would be out sometime in 2020 assuming that it's already either in its conceptualization or designing stage right now.
As for the console's specs, it's impossible to even get a lead on that unless we get inside the engineers' and developers' heads, provided we even know who they are at this point.
But once again, looking at the trends, people won't be seeing a smaller console. The console never went back to being as small as the original Playstation. That's because as technology advances, more advanced and intricate pieces are needed to make it render the visuals and provide the gaming experience.
Also, a disc-less machine is rather impossible as well.
"Steam on PC has taught us that disc drives are becoming less and less necessary, but I can't see them being phased out completely for a while yet," former Official PlayStation Magazine editor Ben Wilson said in an interview.
"People love their boxed products, and 'experts' have been predicting the 'imminent' demise of the CD for more than 20 years. Remind me how that one has turned out? There will always be those who prefer special editions and sexy packaging to invisible downloads, and it's those guys and girls who'll ensure disc drives live on within gaming in some form," Wilson added.
Add that to the fact that downloading a high-gig game or data is not exactly going to be a quick download, so there will always be people relying on discs.
For now, it would be better to wait another two or three years before asking about the PS5 again. In the meantime, gamers should explore and maximize what PS4 is offering right now.
