The resolution-framerate debate resparks as Batman Arkham Knight developers revealed that the game will go native 1080p on the PS4. The recurrent, resolution-framerate war have persisted in the gaming world ever since going HD became popular. Game enthusiasts on every gaming platform have chosen their sides in this unending feud, but who is right?
With Batman Arkham Knight's reveal that the game will have a native 1080p resolution, Playstation subtly sends a "can you top that" message to Xbox, especially as the console has a 900p cap.
According to Gamerant, in response to comparison made between PS4's 1080p resolution and Xbox one's 900p limit, Philip Spencer said that,
"in the end I don't want it to be about a number, because 1080p isn't some mythical, perfect resolution. Frame rate to me is significantly more important to gameplay than resolution and the mix of those two which brings the right art style and freedom, whether it's on PlayStation or our platform."
However, Spencer continued into pointing out that high framerates is also not a magical point that once reached automatically ensures a good game.
"I look at games like The Order on Sony's platform and they picked a different resolution - I like the resolution that they picked, I think it's interesting."
The Order: 1886 used a 30fps rate giving it an almost movie like texture and feel. Aside from The Order's lacklustre gameplay and overall '"joyless" experience, visually speaking, the game is an artistic masterpiece. He sums it all that hoping to find "...some sort of math answer for what the right resolution and frame rate is for a game," is not healthy, "...because there isn't."
This might come as a biased statement of an Xbox head defending the 900p resolution limit of their console, but it is still a very logical answer. However, as Playstation continue to break boundaries, they might, in the long run, hit that resolution-frame rate sweet spot that is a bit out of reach by Xbox because of its self-imposed, resolution handicap. Batman Arkham Knight is set for release this June and gamers will experience a 1080p/60fps visuals of the cape crusader battling out enemies that seek to control Gotham city
