One of the much-heralded tv shows that fans have been raving about has been renewed. The Americans, the FX spy drama series which stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Soviet KGB officers and other competent actors & actresses, will air for a brand new season notwithstanding plummeting ratings.
So what makes the tv series so appealing for viewers who love watching spy stuff? It may be the right mix, plus of course the drawing power of the lead stars and a great supporting cast. The Americans has action scenes like car chases & danger at every turn, along with some sexual tension and a brewing romance plus lots of "tense interactions" with FBI agents and parenting/marriage discussions.
The spy couple is deftly played by Felicity star Keri Russell, who still looks great after her Felicity days. She won the Golden Globe for "Best Actress in a TV Series Drama" award back in 1999 for Felicity. Keri bagged the Satellite Awards Best Actress in Drama Series honor for her role as Elizabeth Jennings in The Americans.
Matthew Rhys, on the other hand, is known for his role as Kevin Walker in the family drama, Brothers & Sisters. Both Keri and Matthew have been nominated by award-giving bodies for their portrayal of the spy couple in an arranged marriage and living up to their cause. The series started off strong, and viewers watched how the attraction between Philip and Elizabeth would play out, even as they also dealt with their ideological differences. As Keri Russell noted in an interview, there was "something sweet in the mess of all of that" and viewers were hooked.
The spy couple's kid is played by Holly Taylor. The daughter is another interesting element of the tv series, since she embodies how a teen character's formative years can be utilized in an intelligent manner, in stark contrast to the typical 'stupid teenager plot' that's been played to death.
If you want to see why many viewers and press/publications have described the show as awesome, thrilling and unsettling, stay tuned as the 3rd season reaches its finale this April, and watch out for the fourth season of the critically acclaimed tv drama series. Season 4 will have 13 gripping episodes that'll air in 2016.
