Apple Leaks: iMac with 8K resolution in the works? Leak could be an innocent mistake - or otherwise

By

A statement by LG Display mentioned that Apple would release an iMac with an 8K resolution. This led some to say that it could be an honest mistake, while others say that it could be inside information. There were supporting statements given that explored how this could be an honest mistake, or otherwise.

A recent report by Techspot said that there seemed to be a resolution race going on now. It noted LG Display's previous statement that Japan was clearly planning to introduce an 8K SHV test broadcast and will immediately "restructure the UHD service." Further, the report added that Korea is preparing to give an 8K service demonstration at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, as well as LG Display, which is said to have revealed a signal of the so-called 8K era, has shown their 98-inch 8K Color Prime Ultra HDTV at CES 2015."

In the LG Display Newsroom, it mentioned that "Apple has also announced that they will release the 'iMac 8K' with a super-high resolution display later this year." This page has been removed, but could still be read at the Internet Archive's WaybackMachine.

LG Display's previous statement drew some doubts from various tech sites. One report based public sources that Apple has not yet announced a release of an "iMack 8K." It noted that "8K displays are not even expected from panel providers until 2016," and the reference to Apple could be an innocent mistake in LG's part. Another also said that "LG's release is factually wrong."

However, these reports also considered that it could still be possible. They cited that Apple has already a 27-inch 5K iMac, and that the company could be heading that way; LG is one of Apple's display partners, so it could be an inside information; lastly, the statement, released intentionally or not, has come from LG, which is a major manufacturing company.

Tom's Guide cited photo editors who reportedly said that "professionals may need to soften images" in order to maintain them from "looking unnaturally sharp." Further, make-up artists will have to re-learn the way they do their jobs, and do more blending. This is because, if the 8K becomes the standard display in the coming years, all kinds of media will have to show more detail than before.
