Kevin Smith's directing schedule was significantly altered after he learned that the shopping mall where he plans to shoot "Mallrats 2" will be demolished next year.
Smith had already announced that he is planning to direct the third sequel to the cult hit "Clerks" later this year before directing "Mallrats 2," a sequel to his 1995 comedy, in spring 2016. In the "Mallrats 2" movie, Smith will need a "big, old, empty mall" that would be blown up in the third act of the film. He eventually found a mall that he could use for the film, but "in order to get to that mall before it goes away," he need to change his directing schedule.
For "Mallrats 2", Kevin Smith has already assembled a slew of actors which he described as a "Blues Brothers"-esque experience." He said on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, "We're putting the band back together, on a mission from Smod."
Smith also revealed that he's still hoping to get "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" star Ben Affleck to reprise his role as Shannon Hamilton: "No word on Batfleck yet... but it would be fun to see if we could get him."
The "Mallrats 2" cast includes Jason Lee (Brodie), Shannen Doherty (Rene), Jeremy London (TS Quint), Ethan Suplee (Willam), Jason Mewes (Jay), Michael Rooker (Svenning) and Stan Lee have all enlisted for the sequel. More recently, Smith announced that the sequel has added Renee Humphrey (Tricia), Joey Lauren Adams (Gwen), Sven-Ole Thorsen (La Fours), Scott Mosier (Roddy), Bryan Johnson (Steve-Dave) and Walter Flanagan (The Fanboy).
ComicBook revealed that the plot of "Mallrats 2" starts with the revelation that a local girl named Julie Dwyer had died while swimming at the YMCA pool, hoping to lose weight for her appearance on a game show which is at the center of the story of the movie. The next day, Dante Hicks and Randal Graves from "Clerks" briefly closed the stores where they worked to visit the funeral of Dwyer, whom Dante had previously dated.
