When Disney released 'Tron: Legacy' in 2010, they were banking on the popularity and cult status that the first film achieved in 1982, and was hoping that it would not only re-ignite the fans' passion for the franchise they were creating, but would get this generation on board the computer world of the "TRONverse." The movie came out, and while it did quite well on both the critics' scores and the box office, 'Tron: Legacy' was not the successful film that Disney had hoped for it to be.
The "somewhat" mediocre performance of 'Tron:Legacy' did not stop Disney from looking ahead - in fact, even before the film was released, producer Steven Lisberger stated that a sequel was already under development. Not much was heard regarding the state of the film for the next three years, but the studio was still optimistic on the future of the 'Tron' franchise.
Why would they not be? The universe of Tron has so much mythos and grandeur that if handled properly, could set off another "Matrix-esque" fanbase (excluding the abyssmal 'Reloaded' and 'Revolutions').
The good news is, after all those years of silence concerning where the production of 'Tron 3' is at, fans may now finally sigh in relief after it was announced recently that Disney IS INDEED making 'Tron 3,' and that they have brought back actors Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde to reprise their roles as Sam Flynn and Quorra respectively (source: TIME Magazine).
Additionally, according to a report by CNET, Joseph Kosinski, who directed 'Tron: Legacy.' will also be returning to helm the franchise. Rumors indicate that filming for 'Tron 3' will commence filming later this year, with a release date to be set sometime in 2017 or 2018.
