'Star Trek' News: Cinematic Universe possibilities, 'Renegade' trailer debut, and more

By

Of all the the movie franchises that Paramount has under its name, none could be more epic or grander than the science fiction space adventure 'Star Trek' - which is why when they announced that they were planning to build a cinematic universe based on the 'Transformers' film franchise, a lot of fans began to wonder, "Why not Star Trek?"

Why not indeed? The universe of 'Star Trek' offers a plethora of mythos, characters and worlds that can be adapted into multiple films and television series (how many 'Star Trek' films and TV episodes have there been all throughout these years?). An article published by the Hollywood Reporter explains how 'Star Trek' offers several things that most other cinematic or TV universes don't, such as "a more optimistic tone, unlike the constant panic and struggle for survival of almost every other genre 'universe' out there."

'Star Trek 3' is currently in production, and based on the details that are available, fans are definitely in for a big adventure once the film comes out in 2016, which also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the franchise's birth. Here are the things that fans know about the film so far:

  • Justin Lin was signed on to helm the project after J.J. Abrams left the director's chair to work on 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.' Abrams will still act as the film's producer.
  • According to a report by Screenrant a year ago, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman were hired to write a script for the film. However, it was reported later on that Kurtzman had left the project and Orci was no longer attached. Recent announcements have put actor Simon Pegg (who plays Montgomery Scott) and Doug Jung in the writer's positions.
  • It was once confirmed that William Shatner would make an appearance in the third 'Star Trek' film, at least that was when Orci was at the helm. Now that Lin has taken over, the original 'Captain Kirk' actor has stated that he has "no idea" to whether he would show up. (source: MyTwinTiers.com)

Speaking of a 'Star Trek' universe being set, Trek Today reported a few days ago that the official trailer for 'Star Trek: Renegades,' an independently produced television series, has hit the web. The show's sypnosis reads:

"It is ten years after Voyager's return from the Delta Quadrant, and the Federation is in a crisis. The Federation's main suppliers of dilithium crystals are disappearing. Space and time have folded around several planets, effectively isolating them from any contact with outside worlds. And this phenomenon is not natural - someone or something is causing this to happen. This necessitates drastic measures; some of which are outside the Federation's normal jurisdiction."

'Star Trek: Renegades' hits the small screens this summer.
