Despite Lionsgate's announcement of a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie adaptation quite a while ago, we've yet to hear anything about the casting for the film's upcoming reboot. But there's one rumor that's been linked to the film recently- that Morgan Freeman will be playing the part of Zordon, the ancient intergalactic being who first created the Power Rangers in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series.
Obviously, Morgan Freeman would be a perfect fit for Zordon, as the legendary actor is known most famously for his distinctive voice, which is very deep and very soothing. Meanwhile, Zordon is known mostly for being a giant floating head and having a very commanding voice. They're a good fit.
However, there are still some obstacles to Morgan Freeman becoming the Power Rangers' mentor. Gamenguide notes that it may still be too early in the casting process for Zordon (or any characters, really) to be cast, which might make the Morgan Freeman rumor nothing but a bit of fan speculation. There have also been rumors of other actors linked to major Power Ranger roles- Taylor Lautner, Chloe Grace Moretz, Liam Hemsworth- but like Morgan Freeman, they've all been unconfirmed for now.
However, there is one person willing to speak openly about the upcoming Power Rangers reboot- Jason David Frank, who starred in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series as the Green Ranger. Here's what he said to IGN about the upcoming film:
"I think we all agree that we've got to keep the brand clean, and I think they're on the same page as me as far as they want adults to see this and be excited as well as kids. I think it's a fine line we have to stay involved in. I know Lionsgate is in charge of the movie, all that stuff. Who know's where Lionsgate's gonna take it? But I do know that Saban protects the brand."
While Mighty Morphin Power Rangers doesn't yet have a release date, keep an eye peeled as more on the film is revealed.
