The Power Rangers may be headed for a comeback. Not just on TV- where they've been popular for decades- but in video games. And even films, too, with a "Power Rangers" reboot on the horizon. Truly, we're on the verge of a great "Power Rangers" resurgence.
Inside Mobile Apps reports that Saban (the company in charge of "Power Rangers") is teaming with game company Funactix to create a massive new mobile game, entitled "Power Rangers: Unite."
They're reporting that "Power Rangers: Unite" is a card battling game (not uncommon in the world of mobile games), that will allow players to collect "Power Rangers"-based cards and play them in combat. Apparently, the cards will include Power Rangers, Zords, weapons and villains. Most notable is the amount of Power Rangers that will be included in the game- according to Inside Mobile Apps, the game will contain Power Rangers from all 22 season of the long-running television series. They'll come together to fight a new enemy created exclusively for the game, named "Nerodark."
They've also got an exclusive quote from Funactix about the game:
"The Power Rangers franchise has a tremendous breadth of mythology - with literally hundreds of characters and weapons, it lends itself perfectly to collection, trading and battle. As fans ourselves, we're thrilled to be partners with one of the biggest TV franchises of all time and are excited to launch an epic game that will appeal to loyal Power Rangers super fans as well the series' newest viewers."
Apparently, the game will launch early this year.
That's not the only "Power Rangers"-based material to be given a big boost recently. KpopStarz reports that Lionsgate, having seen the kind of major money that the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie raked in, have moved to produce a "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" movie.
A later piece in KpopStarz claims that Lionsgate wants a trio of unbelievably high-profile actors as the film's villains: Meryl Streep for Rita Repulsa, Michael Fassbender as Lord Zedd, and Tom Hardy as General Goldar. However amazing that might be, that's too ridiculous to take seriously- we'll see who Lionsgate actually wrangles to play those roles in the film.
Check back soon for the latest "Power Rangers" news. Hopefully, we'll have more info on the film- a director, as well as any confirmation on the cast. As well, there's more info on the mobile game to come- like the exact release date. There's plenty more "Power Rangers" to come.
