Planet of the Apes 3 is one of the future summer blockbusters we've heard almost nothing about. The last film in the franchise, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, was both a monumental success at the box office and a big hit with critics, all of whom loved the story's emotional depth and the incredible detail in bringing the apes to life, like Caesar, played by Andy Serkis.
But according to certain rumors, we might have the first plot details for the third Planet of the Apes film- which, as of now still doesn't have an official title (although it's a safe bet that the movie will be titled Something of the Planet of the Apes). WhatCuture recently put out a list of potential story directions that the next Planet of the Apes film could take, and one of them is particularly fascinating- and something completely untouched by the current series of Planet of the Apes reboots. Time travel.
According to WhatCulture, the original Planet of the Apes novel featured time travel quite heavily- and as well, the original films starring Charlton Heston also were heavy in that regard (same with the Mark Wahlberg reboot, directed by Tim Burton). It's very possible this could be the story for our next Planet of the Apes film.
We also know a character who's likely to return in the next installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Koba, the villainous bonobo played by Toby Kebbell in the first two films, is rumored to return in the third outing. IGN has a quote from director Matt Reeves, who reveals that he purposely left the second Planet of the Apes film open-ended, so that he could potentially bring Koba back for another sequel.
"I thought that Toby Kebbell gave such an incredible performance. And I thought he was so powerful and I thought God you don't find a villain who has got that great a story. Because as you said he was not really formed as a villain, he's really a tragic figure. And I thought God, he's amazing let's leave open the possibility, let's create the door of a possibility if we find a story that becomes worth telling that we can go down that path again because I thought the vein was so rich."
Reeves was recently confirmed as the director of Planet of the Apes 3, as well.
Planet of the Apes 3 is set to premiere on July 24, 2017.
