'Suicide Squad' Updates: First look at Will Smith's Deadshot, Batman spotted on set, and more

It is no secret that next year's 'Suicide Squad' is one of the most ambitious comic book-based movie projects in that it presents something new to the comic book superhero movie genre - the title characters are not heroes but villains. And with Will Smith being cast in one of the title roles (he is known for only playing "good guys" so far), fans could not wait to see his take on the character. Fortunately, they got a glimpse of how Smith will look in the upcoming supervillain teamup movie.

In recent reports made by Mirror and the Hollywood Reporter, actor Will Smith was recently spotted on the set of 'Suicide Squad.' Smith has been cast to play the mercenary-for-hire Floyd Lawton, a.k.a. Deadshot, and by the look of him on the images, it appears that he is either on his civilian disguise or wearing his "supposed" uniform. If the latter is true, then a lot of comic book fans would be disappointed because Smith's get-up is not exactly what they would expect, especially since he is missing the character's iconic "bionic eye."

Smith stepped on the set with a shaved head for the role, and in all honesty, while his appearance may not exactly mirror the Deadshot in the comics, he does look extremely badass, which further solidifies the fact that Warner Bros. made the right decision in getting him for the role. There has been no confirmation yet as to whether these images of Smith are him in the Deadshot costume or simply the Floyd Lawton civilian persona, so fans should take reports such as this with a grain of salt for the meantime.

One of the most important things that fans have to remember when watching their favorite comic book characters on the big screen is that the character does not have to look exactly like their comic book counterpart, especially if it would make them look ridiculous for the modern viewer (take Marvel Comics' Galactus for example). If the producers of the film decided to modernize their take on a particular character, it would actually be good as it gives the moviegoers more reason to relate with the character.

Another very interesting development in the production of 'Suicide Squad' is a picture taken of actor Ben Affleck who was puported to be in the Batsuit while on the set of the film. According to a report by eTalk, the film's production crew made great effort to conceal Affleck's identity by covering him with a black sheet while walking across the set, but based on the look of the lower half of his body, it was obvious that he was wearing the Batsuit. There has been no official word yet as to what Batman's role is in the movie, but some speculations say that he might make an appeareance similar to the animated film 'Batman: Assault on Arkham.'

Earlier this week, fans also got a first official look at Jared Leto as the Joker through a Twitter post made by 'Suicide Squad' director David Ayer. The image was met with mixed reactions from fans and critics, with most of them comparing Leto's characterization of the iconic Batman villain to the likes of Heath Ledger's and Jack Nicholson's portrayals. An important thing to note here is that this is just a "first look" at the character, and there may still be changes as the film is over a year away. One can remember how Ledger's casting was met with a lot of negative criticism, but after 'The Dark Knight,' well, fans know the whole story.

'Suicide Squad' is scheduled to arrive on the big screen on August 5, 2016.
