Street Fighter 5 Update: Capcom confirms larger scope, surprise expansion to bring in new players while keeping fans interested

Street Fighter 5 is not going to be the usual incremental improvement to the game, according to franchise producer Yoshinori Ono.

Ono revealed in an interview with Edge Magazine that the upcoming video game version will give long time fans some welcome surprises, and will intrigue new players to join the game.

"With Street Fighter 5, we have a fantastic opportunity to create something with a larger scope, a game that encompasses all that Street Fighter has become in the last few years, but which also expands on that to become something it has never been before as well. So now we want to create something that nobody is expecting," disclosed Ono.

Games Radar reported the Street Fighter chief discussing how the upcoming video game will build upon the successes of previous versions. Ono says, "It's going to be a title that caters to fans, of course, but one that also invites completely new players onto the scene. Street Fighter 4 was about reviving a passion. Street Fighter 5 is about growing that passion."

The Street Fighter design leader described the creative process to as one that is easier, newer and unique, "The passion around Street Fighter is currently such that the internal team within Capcom has been incredibly eager. In personal terms, Street Fighter 5 represents something new for me too."

When asked about how the new game will address fan feedback, Ono admitted they have learned to be selective enough, "It's a case of finding key people in communities around the world, those who aren't as visible perhaps, in order to hear their take."

The Capcom leader however readily acknowledges the value of game fans to ensure Street Fighter's continued existence, "Obviously, you can never make everyone happy, but if we can make the majority happy, then I'm confident in Street Fighter's future."

In an apparent move to engage a bigger fan base, Capcom released the latest trailer of Street Fighter 5 featuring 8-division boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and his team in action as they prepare to fight their biggest opponent. Event Hubs describes the video trailer of the Pacquiao team talking about their "humble beginnings, and how they intend to rise up and walk away victorious" while "sporting some slick Street Fighter 5 gear."

Street Fighter 5 will be available exclusively on PS4 and PC gaming consoles and is tentatively slated for release in 2016.
