Iron Man 4 seems less and less likely with each passing Marvel movie. At this point, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is booked up solid until 2020, and there are zero chances of Iron Man 4 happening before then- meaning we'll have to wait another five years (at the minimum) just to see Tony Stark in his own film again.
But new rumors claim we'll still be seeing lots of Stark- just not in a film with his name on it. According to the latest buzz, Iron Man may be appearing in the Marvel films Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. And while it's not yet known what purpose he'll serve in those films (except for Spider-Man, as an early rumor included a storyline where Peter Parker auditions to become an Avenger, with Iron Man as his mentor), but with those in mind he may not need Iron Man 4. Plus, he'll also be starring in a villainous role in Captain America: Civil War, as Captain America faces off against Iron Man and splits the superhero community in half.
A recent update with Iron Man 4 involved an interview with Robert Downey, Jr. that went in a very unpleasant direction. Interviewer Krishan Guru-Murthy pressured Downey, Jr. with questions about his past and his struggles with addiction (as well as his political beliefs), while Downey, Jr. simply wanted to talk about Avengers: Age of Ultron. Eventually, Downey Jr. walke away from the interview, later admitting that he assumed kids would be watching and he thought it would be inappropriate to discuss his past in that venue.
In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man grapples with his decision to create Ultron and may end up quitting the Avengers- however, we know that won't be the case forever, as he's returning in Civil War next year.
