Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Nexus 9 Firmware Update: Memory Bug Fixes, Boatloader Revealed; Simultaneous Roll Out Release Soon?

By

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge user that received the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update via T-Mobile did not divulge much about the current firmware on board his phone, yet it reveals more than what is said and shown in the accompanying video he posted on YouTube. Yes: it confirms features that have been speculated to be included in the current firmware, its imminent release, and the significance of this early release on a single device user.

XDA-Developer Eduardo Mera, the Galaxy S6 Edge user that claimed to have gotten the Android 5.1.1 L update, confirmed via the video that the locks of the boatloader device has been updated and the memory leak issue that Samsung admitted to be existing since it has started updating the firmware has been repaired. That particular bug is linked with the Android update since it has been seen by device users when the first update was launched. Hence, even recently released devices like Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are not spared from it.

How about the Guest Mode option which isn't available on the two Galaxy phones out-of-the-box? Mera did not mention about this, nor was it shown on the video, but Phandroid assures that Galaxy phone users (most recent ones) will find this functionality activited once they receive the update. The Kids Mode option is also said to be arriving with the Android 5.1.1 update for the Samsung flagship duo.

This advance and unexpected Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update from Samsung is also a confirmation of the ongoing development of the firmware for its 2015 flagship phones. This also means that the release could happen soon considering that the device user has positive feedback on the update. Come the official roll out release, T-Mobile subscribers must be the first ones to have the Android update on their Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge devices.

Samsung's decision to skip Android updates in between 5.0.2 L and 5.1.1 L makes sense as the current firmware is designed to fix the memory leak bug, the most persistent problem that Android phone users have been experiencing since the Lollipop update.

Before the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, several Nexus devices have already received the current firmware with Nexus 7 2012 and 2013 versions being the latest in the list. The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is also expected to be rolled out to Nexus 9, one of Nexus devices that has not received update in 5 months compared to other Nexus devices that has received at least 2 in the same time frame.
